You may well already know of Dan Aykroyd, and he, therefore, needs no introduction here. If you don’t know of him – you should! – so let me assist.

Who is Dan Aykroyd?

Most widely known for the incredible hit Movie Ghostbusters, Dan Aykroyd is an American actor, producer, screenwriter, comedian and musician. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in 1952, Dan Aykroyd went on to study Criminology and Sociology at college in 1969 but dropped out before finishing his degree.

Dan then moved into the comedy scene, where he worked as a standup comedian for several years, performing in nightclubs in Canada and also managing a speakeasy in Toronto. Dan later moved on to acting, developing his career with Sock’n’Buskin at Carleton University.

Dan Aykroyd was diagnosed with Tourette’s at age 12, but he didn’t receive an Asperger’s diagnosis until he was an adult in the 1980s. It was only after it was suggested by his wife, Donna Dixon, to seek a medical opinion that the diagnosis was made.

Dan Aykroyd on Asperger’s

What I love about Dan Aykroyd is his appreciation for having Asperger’s. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all fun and games, and even Dan himself admits to that. But it was his obsession with ghosts and law enforcement that led to the creation of his phenomenal classic Ghostbusters.

I mean, could you imagine a world where the Ghostbuster movies didn’t exist? I know I couldn’t, and I’m incredibly grateful he took his obsession and creativity and channelled it into something that is enjoyed by millions. Because, in my eyes, that’s what it’s all about.

We all think differently – some more than others. And that’s the gift, and it’s meant to be shared.

But there’s far more to Dan Aykroyd than Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989). He’s had a long career in writing, acting and/or producing many other classics, including:

  • The Blues Brothers 2000 (1998) Actor & Producer
  • Driving Miss Daisy (1989) Actor & Producer
  • My Girl (1991) Actor
  • Chaplin (1992) Actor
  • Coneheads (1993) Actor & Screenwriter
  • Dragnet (1987) Actor & Screenwriter
